I get asked about Mercury retrograde more than anything else in astrology, usually by someone whose laptop has just died. So here it is in one place: Mercury retrograde 2026 and 2027, every date, every degree, the shadow either side, and what each one is actually about. If you came for the dates, they’re straight below. If you came because someone told you to cancel everything until December, stay a little longer, because I think you’ll feel better by the end.
And since it’s October as I write this, the useful bit first. The next Mercury retrograde starts on 24 October 2026, in Scorpio, and Mercury has been in its shadow since 4 October. So if conversations have felt a bit sticky lately, that’s the warm-up.

Three again in 2027, and this time each one starts in one sign and backs into the sign before it, which changes what it’s about.
What does Mercury retrograde mean?
In astrology Mercury is the planet of talk, and of the thinking you do before you talk. It looks after messages and plans, and travel, the short trips more than the big ones. It also gets anything made of words that two people have to agree on, like a contract. In your own chart, Mercury is how your mind works: whether you’re the person who replies in four seconds or the one who takes four days.
Retrograde is the word for when a planet looks as if it’s moving backwards through the zodiac. Mercury keeps going round the Sun the same way the whole time. Earth is going round too, more slowly and further out, and three or four times a year the two of us pass each other. For about three weeks, seen from here, Mercury seems to slide backwards against the stars. It’s the trick you see from a train, when the one on the next track moves at a different speed and for a moment seems to go backwards. The whole effect comes from where we’re standing.
Astrology reads that backing-up as a time for going back over things. The days Mercury seems to stand still and turn are called stations, and they’re the dates I give to the day.
What is the Mercury retrograde shadow?
The shadow is the stretch of the zodiac Mercury crosses three times: once going forward, once backing over it, and once going forward again. The first crossing is the pre-shadow, the weeks before the retrograde when its themes start to show up. The last is the post-shadow, after Mercury turns direct, when it walks back over the same ground and things settle.
Here’s the one we’re in now. Mercury reached 5°02′ Scorpio on 4 October. It carries on to 20°59′ Scorpio, stops there on 24 October and backs up, reaching 5°02′ again on 13 November, when it turns direct. Then it walks the same ground a third time and clears 20°59′ on 30 November. So that piece of Scorpio, from about 5° to 21°, gets crossed three times in eight weeks. Whatever comes up in early October has a habit of coming back round during the retrograde and getting sorted in the post-shadow.
What each Mercury retrograde in 2026 and 2027 is about
The sign Mercury is in sets the topic, and where it backs from one sign into another, both signs have a say.
February to March 2026: Pisces
Retrograde at 22°34′ Pisces on 26 February, direct at 8°29′ Pisces on 20 March. Pisces is the sign where the edges go soft, so this one was about blurred lines: the plan that meant one thing to you and something else to them, and the hunch you went with when the facts ran out. If February felt like reading a text through a steamed-up window, that was Pisces.
June to July 2026: Cancer
Retrograde at 26°15′ Cancer on 29 June, direct at 16°19′ Cancer on 23 July. Cancer is home and family, so the talk went there, to the conversation with a parent and the old feeling that turned up uninvited at Sunday lunch. Cancer remembers everything, and a lot of summer 2026 was the past asking for one more word.
October to November 2026: Scorpio
Retrograde at 20°59′ Scorpio on 24 October, direct at 5°02′ Scorpio on 13 November. Scorpio is the sign of what’s said in private, so this one is about trust: who you tell, and what you’ve kept to yourself for a while now. Secrets do tend to surface in a Scorpio retrograde. I’d treat that as a chance to say the true thing properly, in your own words, before someone else says it badly.
February to March 2027: Pisces into Aquarius
Retrograde at 5°59′ Pisces on 9 February, direct at 20°55′ Aquarius on 3 March, with the shadow starting on 25 January. Mercury opens in Pisces and backs into Aquarius, the sign of friends and the groups you belong to, and of technology. Think of the group chat, and the friend you drifted from without meaning to. Of all six, this is the one where blaming your phone is at least on topic.
June to July 2027: Cancer into Gemini
Retrograde at 6°22′ Cancer on 10 June, direct at 27°28′ Gemini on 4 July. It starts in Cancer, home again, and slips back into the last degrees of Gemini, which is one of the two signs Mercury rules. Gemini is siblings and short trips, the everyday chat that keeps a life running. This is the brother you keep meaning to ring, and the weekend away that somehow needs booking twice.
October 2027: Scorpio into Libra
Retrograde at 4°56′ Scorpio on 7 October, direct at 19°19′ Libra on 28 October. Mercury backs out of Scorpio into Libra, the sign of agreements and partners, so this one is about fairness: who said they’d do what, and whether the deal between two people still feels even. It’s a good stretch to reread the agreements you already have, the spoken ones included. I read things twice before I sign them anyway; in a Libra retrograde I just do it with more conviction.
Mercury and Venus retrograde together in October and November 2026
This is the stretch of 2026 people are going to talk about. Venus, the planet of love and of what you value, turned retrograde on 3 October and goes direct on 14 November, which is 13 November in the Americas. Mercury joins it on 24 October. So from 24 October to 13 November, both planets are retrograde at once.
- Venus retrograde
- 3 October – 14 November
- Mercury retrograde
- 24 October – 13 November
- Both retrograde
- 24 October – 13 November
Put the two together and you get conversations about love going back over old ground, about what you want and who you want it with. Exes are the obvious headline, and yes, people from the past do have a way of reappearing when both planets are looking backwards. Whether you reply is still up to you. The more useful version, I think, is the talk you’ve been putting off with someone who’s still here. The Venus side has its own page, Venus retrograde 2026, if you want the detail.
What is Mercury retrograde actually good for?
Retrograde is for anything that starts with re-. Re-doing the draft. Revising the plan. Re-reading the message before you send it, and the contract before you sign it. Reconnecting with someone you lost touch with. Mercury is going back over its own ground, so going back over yours fits the weather.
Anything that starts with re- goes better in a retrograde than anything that starts from scratch.
That’s why the usual advice is to finish things rather than launch them. Life doesn’t check the ephemeris, the table of where the planets are each day, so if something new has to start in a retrograde, give it an extra read. Leave a bit of slack in travel plans and say the important thing in full sentences. That’s good practice in any month; retrograde is just the reminder.
Does Mercury retrograde really break your phone?
I love Mercury retrograde, and I also think it gets blamed for a lot it has nothing to do with. Phones break all year. Flights get delayed in every month. Counting the shadows, Mercury spends close to half of 2026 in one stretch or another, so plenty of ordinary bad luck lands inside it and gets a planetary excuse.
It also gets used as a reason to put life on hold, which I think costs people more than a broken charger. People get married and move house in retrograde all the time, and most of it goes fine. What retrograde asks for is attention: a second look at the details, and a bit of patience when other people miss them. If anything, it’s a good excuse to be kind to the colleague who replied all.
Will you feel Mercury retrograde more than other people?
Some people sail through and some feel every one, and the chart usually shows why. Here’s what I look at, if you have your chart to hand, in Spisce or anywhere else.
Mercury itself comes first. If it’s a big deal in your chart, say it sits right next to your Sun or in your first house, you’ll notice more when it slows down. Then Gemini and Virgo. Mercury rules both signs, so the more of your chart sits in them, the closer its retrogrades land to home. With Gemini or Virgo as your rising sign, Mercury is your chart ruler, the planet that speaks for the whole chart, and you’ll probably feel every station.
Then the degrees. Look at the shadow for each retrograde above: this autumn it’s roughly 5° to 21° Scorpio. If you have a planet in that stretch, Mercury goes over it three times, and whatever that planet stands for gets a proper review. For 2027 the stretches run from 20°55′ Aquarius to 5°59′ Pisces, from 27°28′ Gemini to 6°22′ Cancer, and from 19°19′ Libra to 4°56′ Scorpio. The house the shadow falls in, which depends on your rising sign, tells you which part of your life gets the re-doing.
Any of these just means you’ll notice more, and noticing is most of the point. So, while both planets are looking backwards this autumn, who’s the one person you’d actually like to hear from?
