As I write this, Pluto is about to turn direct on 16 October 2026, and I’ve had more questions about Pluto in Aquarius this year than about any other planet, which is quite something for a little icy world you’ll never spot from your back garden. It runs from late 2024 to early 2044, with some back and forth at each end, and it’s the kind of transit you notice in hindsight more than on the day. So here are the dates, what I think it means, and how to tell whether it’s touching your chart. The short answer: if you have anything at 1° to 6° of Aquarius, Leo, Taurus or Scorpio, or you were born around 1985 or 1986, it probably is.

Pluto in Aquarius dates

Pluto takes about 248 years to go round the zodiac, and its orbit is lopsided, so it spends anywhere from about 12 to 30 years in a sign. It also likes to dip a toe in first. It crosses into the new sign, gets pulled back by its retrograde (the months each year when a planet seems to back up, from where we stand on Earth), and settles only on the third try. Here’s how that went this time, and how it ends.

So when people say Pluto went into Aquarius, they mostly mean 19 November 2024, and the real end is 19 January 2044. The last time Pluto was in Aquarius was the late 1700s, so nobody alive has been through one of these, and I’d take anyone who sounds very sure about it with a pinch of salt. Me included.

What does Pluto in Aquarius mean?

What Pluto stands for

Pluto is the planet of power, especially the kind that works below the surface. Wherever it goes, what’s been hidden tends to come up, and whatever has run its course comes to an end so something else has room. The change it brings is slow and total. I think of Pluto as a long renovation: twenty years of living with the dust and the odd surprise behind the plaster, and at the end a house that finally fits the people in it.

What Aquarius stands for

Aquarius is the sign of the group, meaning the networks you belong to and the future you build with them. It’s an air sign, so it lives in ideas, and a fixed sign, so once it has an idea it holds on to it. It’s also the sign of technology and the collective. Its big question, the one it never quite settles, is how you stay yourself while being one of many. Aquarius wants to belong to the crowd and be the odd one out in it at the same time, and honestly, fair enough.

What the two make together

Put Pluto’s power together with Aquarius’s networks and you get the main theme of these twenty years: power spreading out of a few hands and into groups, and long conversations about technology and who controls it. I’m keeping this general on purpose. Astrology is good at describing the mood of a period and poor at calling specific events, and anyone telling you what happens to which country in 2031 is guessing. What I’d expect is that we keep asking who owns the networks we all live on, and that the groups people belong to, online and off, matter more and more to how they see themselves.

Pluto in Aquarius 2026: where is it now?

Pluto moves about 1.5 degrees a year, which makes a snail look reckless. On 1 January 2025 it was at 1° Aquarius, and in 2026 it’s working back and forth over 3° to 5°. Each year it goes forward about four degrees, backs up about two and a half on the retrograde, and nets out at the degree and a half. Here’s this year’s retrograde and the next two, so you can see the creep.

The turn on 16 October is a quiet one. Retrograde Pluto is a stretch for going back over things, and direct Pluto gets on with the work. What’s louder this autumn is Venus, which squares Pluto three times during its own retrograde, on 15 September, 20 October and 9 December, all at about 3° Scorpio and Aquarius. A square is an aspect of 90 degrees, and it feels like friction, the kind that makes you look at something you’d been stepping around. I go through those dates in the Venus retrograde 2026 guide, but if a relationship has felt a bit audited lately, that’s probably part of it.

How does Pluto in Aquarius affect me?

There are two ways to look at it, and the first works for everyone. Your birth chart is split into twelve houses, each one an area of life, and Aquarius sits on one of them. That house is where Pluto is doing its slow renovation until 2044. If it’s your tenth, the house of career and reputation, the change tends to show up in your work and how you’re seen. If it’s your seventh, the house of partners, it’s your closest one-to-one relationships that get reworked. You need your birth time for this, because the houses hang off your rising sign (I go through that in how to find your rising sign), and any chart app will show you which house Aquarius is in, Spisce included.

The second way is more precise, and it’s about what Pluto is touching right now. In 2026 Pluto is at 3° to 5° Aquarius, so the placements feeling it are anything at about 1° to 6° of the fixed signs. The fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, the four that sit in the middle of each season and like things to stay put. If your Sun, Moon, rising sign or any planet is there, Pluto is making an aspect to it. Aquarius gets the conjunction, which means Pluto is on the same degree and blends with it. Leo gets the opposition, 180 degrees away, which tends to arrive through other people. Taurus and Scorpio get squares, the friction one from above.

One more thing about those early degrees. Pluto often crosses the same degree three times, forward, back on the retrograde, then forward again, so this comes in waves over a year or two, and the later degrees get their turn as Pluto moves on.

Aquarius Sun or rising

You get Pluto in your own sign for twenty years, which sounds like a lot because it is. With an Aquarius Sun it’s about who you are and what you’re for; with Aquarius rising it’s the way you meet the world, since the rising sign is the front door of the chart. Early-degree Aquarius Suns, born in roughly the first week of Aquarius season, are in it now. What I see most is people outgrowing a version of themselves they’d been doing for a group, and finding out who they are when nobody’s watching.

Leo Sun or rising

Pluto sits opposite you, and oppositions usually come through other people. If your Leo Sun is at 1° to 6°, which is roughly the last week of July, it’s often someone close who brings the Pluto stuff to your door. Leo wants to shine on its own terms, and Aquarius keeps asking what the shining is for and who it’s with. It can be uncomfortable, and it’s useful: you get to see who you are in your relationships when someone else holds the room for a while.

Taurus Sun or rising

Taurus gets a square, so this is the friction. Early-degree Taurus Suns are born around the last week of April. Taurus likes things to stay as they are, Aquarius likes them to change, and Pluto is very patient about which of those wins. I tend to see it in routines and in what you count as safe: the set-up you’ve had for years starts to feel a size too small, and you notice before you’re ready to do anything about it. That’s fine. Taurus moves when it moves, and Pluto is in no rush either.

Scorpio Sun or rising

Scorpio is Pluto’s own sign, so you know this planet better than most, and you get a square too. Early-degree Scorpio Suns are born around the last week of October. Scorpio’s instinct is to keep things close, and Aquarius keeps nudging you to let a few more people in, or to say out loud the thing you’d usually only think. And the three Venus squares to Pluto this autumn happen at about 3° Scorpio, so if your Sun or rising is near there, you’ve had a full year, and you’re allowed to feel it.

Pluto square Pluto: if you were born between 1984 and 1995

This is the one I get asked about most. If you were born roughly 1984 to 1995, your natal Pluto (where Pluto was when you were born) is in Scorpio. As transiting Pluto (where it is now) moves through Aquarius, it squares your natal Pluto, one birth year after another. Pluto square Pluto is one of the big midlife transits, and it tends to feel like a quiet audit of power: where you’ve given yours away, and what you’d change if you stopped being polite about it. If your Saturn return was the transit that had you build a life, this is the later one about owning the power you already have in it.

Born in 1985 or 1986? Your Pluto square Pluto is happening in 2026 and 2027.

Here’s roughly where Pluto was in the middle of each birth year. Find yours, then find the year Pluto reaches the same degree of Aquarius in the list after it.

So in 2026 and 2027, with Pluto at 3° to 5° Aquarius, it’s people born around 1985 and 1986 having theirs. If you were born in 1990, your natal Pluto is at about 15° Scorpio, and transiting Pluto gets to 15° Aquarius in the early-to-mid 2030s. If you were born in 1994, your turn comes in the early 2040s. You get to watch your friends go first, which is either reassuring or a bit like queueing for the dentist.

What I like about Pluto in Aquarius is that it’s slow, so there’s time. A degree and a half a year gives you room to notice what’s shifting in your Aquarius house and decide what’s worth keeping. So which house is Aquarius in for you, and what’s been quietly changing there since 2024?
